Immigration Speaker Series: The Work Continues – 3/18
Many positive changes are happening on the federal and state level for the immigrant and refugee community, but there is still much work to do. LHiNC in partnership with the Minneapolis Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs is continuing our speaker series devoted to the issues facing the city’s immigrant and refugee communities.
On March 18 at 6:30 p.m., we are excited to welcome Michele Garnett McKenzie from Advocates for Human Rights. She will explain the local impact of recent changes to federal immigration policy, highlight current state legislation that, if passed, could have a significant and positive impact, and outline exactly how people can get involved as a lawyer, translator or court observer. On September 17, Veena Iyer, Executive Director of the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota, joined us to discuss the work of the center during these challenging times and shared specific action steps for people who want to help immigrants and refugees in our community and the center in its work.
2. Michelle Rivero, Minneapolis Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs, August 2020
The first talk, held on August 12, featured Michelle Rivero. Ms. Rivero heads up the city’s Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs (OIRA), an office that opened in July 2018 and which supports city initiatives to welcome, support, and defend the city’s immigrant and refugee communities.
