Linden Hills

The Linden Hills neighborhood, named for the area’s abundance of linden trees and gentle hills, represents the ideal in urban living with small-town charm. Nestled between Lake Harriet and Bde Maka Ska in the city’s southwest corner, Linden Hills is beloved for its walkability, with nature, retail, and top-rated restaurants all nearby.

Linden Hills also boasts easy access to some of Minneapolis' best outdoor recreation spots, including scenic walking and biking trails around the Chain of Lakes and parks perfect for picnicking, sailing, or simply enjoying nature.

In the winter, there is plenty of activity in the neighborhood as well with Linden Hills Park offering skating rinks and Lake Harriet being home to the Minneapolis Kite Festival, the Art Shanty Projects, and the Lake Harriet Magic Hole.

Neighborhood History

It is easy to be fascinated by the rich history of this community, which has been well-documented by the Linden Hills History Study Group. The Linden Hills History Study Group sponsors walking tours, slide shows, field trips, and lectures centered around the rich history of our Southwest Minneapolis neighborhood. All are welcome to attend. Event notices are published on their website.

The group has the following resources to learn more about the history of the area:

  • the historical book Down at the Lake was written by the group and is available for purchase at several local Linden Hills retailers, including the Wedge Linden Hills and Settergren's of Linden Hills. This book is also available through the Hennepin County Library

  • hours of conversations with historians are recorded to document the history of Linden Hills. You can check out these audio recordings through the Hennepin County Library

  • self-guided walking tours
