Linden Hills Littles Fall Calendar 2024

Looking to keep your kids busy this fall? Here are activities in Linden Hills that are still enrolling (as of 8/30) or don’t require pre-registration. Email additional suggestions to newsletter@lindenhills.org.


WEEKLY

Mondays: Ballet, Tap, & Creative Movement at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Mondays at 5:45p. Registration still open for ages 5-9. Session runs 9/9 to 10/28. $72 for residents, registration required.

Tuesdays: Weekly Story Time with Wild Rumpus on Tuesdays at 10:30a. Primarily geared towards toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Tuesdays: Young Rembrandts – Character Creation at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Tuesdays from 4-5p. Session runs from 9/17 to 10/8. Learn the basics of cartooning and create your own characters! Each day students will learn techniques used in cartooning. Ages 6-11, free for residents, registration required.

Wednesdays: Family Storytime at Linden Hills Library on Wednesdays at 10a & 11a. Talk, sing, read, write and play together. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement. For children of all ages and their caregivers, no registration required.

Thursdays: Family Ceramics: Open Studio at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Thursdays from 4:30-6p. Session runs from 9/12 to 10/10. Parents and their children can use their creativity in clay. Clay, tools and glazes provided for participants. All projects will be fired at no additional cost to students. Adults can come without children as well. This is an open studio time with peer instruction. Ages 6+, $40 for residents, registration required.

Fridays: Baby Storytime at Linden Hills Library on Fridays at 10a & 11a. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement in a format especially designed for babies. For children from birth to 24 months.


SEPTEMBER

September 7: Read to a Dog at the Linden Hills Library on Saturday, 9/7 from 11a-1p. Cuddle up with a certified therapy dog and practice reading aloud. Sign up when you arrive for a 15-minute slot. Drop-ins will be accommodated based on availability. Bring your own favorite book or use one of ours. Ages K-5, free.

September 13: Dinner and a Movie at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Friday, 9/13 from 6-8:30p. Take a break, kick your feet up and watch a PG movie with fellow movie fans. Reserve your spot for a pizza, popcorn and the latest movie. Ages 6-12, $10 for residents, registration required.

September 13: Simply Overdressed at Linden Hills Park on Friday, 9/13 at 6p. Great mix of family-friendly music from the original duo. Shows feature thematic material and insights from the duo into the music they love so much! All ages, free.

September 17: Crafting with Plarn! at the Linden Hills Library on Tuesday, 9/17 from 6-7:30p. In collaboration with Textile Center. Breathe new life into plastic bags by learning to fuse them into useable, waterproof “fabric” for stitching and also create “plarn” (plastic yarn!), then use these recycled materials to create a useable stitched pouch! Materials provided. Teens, free, registration required.

September 21: John Coy ‘The Secret of Fall’ in conversation with Molly Beth Griffin at Wild Rumpus on Saturday, 9/21 at 10:30a. Wild Rumpus is kicking off the season with their friend Joy Coy as he brings a brand new picture book celebrating one of the best times of year: FALL!! He will be joined in conversation by author Molly Beth Griffin, who has written her own autumnal picture book – ‘The Big Leaf Leap!’ Join them for stories, leaf rubbing, and autumnal delight before making your way over to the Linden Hills Fall Festival in the park!

September 21: Linden Hills Fall Festival on Saturday, 9/21 from 12-8p at Linden Hills Park. Includes food trucks, bike parade, kids’ activities, live music, a beer garden, plus a silent auction and used book sale! All ages.

September 27: Dinner and a Movie at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Friday, 9/27 from 6-8:30p. Take a break, kick your feet up and watch a PG movie with fellow movie fans. Reserve your spot for a pizza, popcorn and the latest movie. Ages 6-12, $10 for residents, registration required.

September 28: Trucksploration Big Rig Vehicle Fair at Lake Harriet Upper Campus on Saturday, 9/28 from 12-3p. The wildly popular event allows children of all ages to climb on, learn about and explore their favorite big trucks and vehicles. Sit in a fire engine, rescue boat or snowplow, and meet police horses and bomb squad robots. Fire helmets will be given to the first 150 children. Free, rain date will be Sunday, 9/29.

September 29: Youth Birdwatching at Roberts Bird Sanctuary on Sunday, 9/29 at 9a. People of all ages with any level of knowledge and abilities are welcome! Youth under 13 will need an adult companion. Binoculars are provided at no cost for free. All ages, free, pre-registration is required.


OCTOBER

October 1: Writing Great College Application Essays at the Linden Hills Library on Tuesday, 10/1 from 6-7:30p. Use basic creative writing craft elements such as strong characterization, compelling narrative structure, and an interesting premise to write great college application essays. Leave with ideas that will get you started on writing an essay to wow your readers! Registration required.

October 4: Dinner and a Movie at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Friday, 10/4 from 6-8:30p. Take a break, kick your feet up and watch a PG movie with fellow movie fans. Reserve your spot for a pizza, popcorn and the latest movie. Ages 6-12, $10 for residents, registration required.

October 12 & 13: Take the Trolley to Farmer Ken and Jan’s Pumpkin Patch on Saturday and Sunday from 12:30-4p. Take a trolley ride and bring home a Halloween pumpkin. Riders get off the car at the “pumpkin patch” where they can search for just the right pumpkin. Streetcars make frequent trips to the pumpkin patch. There are no advance tickets or reservations. Regular fares apply; pumpkins are $7 while supplies last.

October 18: Dinner and a Movie at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Friday, 10/18 from 6-8:30p. Take a break, kick your feet up and watch a PG movie with fellow movie fans. Reserve your spot for a pizza, popcorn and the latest movie. Ages 6-12, $10 for residents, registration required

October 19: Transylvania Trolley on Saturday, 10/19 from 12:30-4p. Count Karl the Vampire Motorman is your host for this Halloween trip. Not scary ― just silly. Wear a costume and get a treat. The ride is about 15 minutes and no advance ticket or reservation is required. Regular fares apply.

October 25: Family Halloween Party at Southwest High School on Friday, 10/25 from 6:30-9p. Put on your most friendly costume and join us for our annual Family Halloween Party at Southwest. Activities include carnival games, a raffle for door prizes, a bingo hall, magic shows, puppet shows, dinner concessions, treats and prizes. Children must be accompanied by an adult. A food shelf donation is accepted at the door. $3 per person.

October 26: Halloween at the Hills at Linden Hills Park on Saturday, 10/26 from 3-5p. Annual Halloween party in a fun and safe environment, perfect for the whole family. Hayrides, DJ dance party and treats will be part of the fun! Free, no pre-registration required.

October 26: Streetcar Named Expire on the Trolley on Saturday, 10/26 from 7-10p. Travel through the dark forest aboard a spooky trolley. What fate awaits those foolish enough to ride to the end of the line? This event is suitable for most family members ― there’s no blood or gore ― but may be frightening for the very young. And the later it gets, the more frightening the ride becomes. There are no advance tickets or reservations. $5 fare or you can purchase a $12 Fright Pass for unlimited rides throughout the evening.

October 27: Trick ‘r Trolley on Sunday, 10/27 at 1p, 2p, & 3p. It’s the Son of PJ Party! Wear your Halloween costume and come for a ride, a story, and a treat. This is a very popular event and typically sells out. The PJ Party is presented in partnership with Wild Rumpus Books. Tickets required and will go on sale 10/1.

October 31: Spooky Stories at the Linden Hills Library on Thursday, 10/31 from 4-7p. For children of all ages and their caregivers. Stop in for a few minutes throughout the evening to hear short, spooky stories read by library staff.

October 31: All Aboard Trick ‘r Treat on the Trolley on Thursday, 10/31 from 4-7p. A special time for neurodiverse folks, families, and friends. Regular fares apply.
