Linden Hills Fall Calendar

WEEKLY

Tuesdays: Trivia with Trivia Mafia at Wooden Ship on Tuesdays at 6:30p.

Thursdays: Live music at Wooden Ship on Thursdays at 6:00p.

Thursdays: Adult Ceramics: Open Studio at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Thursdays from 6:15-8p. Session runs from 9/12 to 10/10. Clay, tools and glazes provided for participants. All projects will be fired at no additional cost to students. This is an open studio time with peer instruction. Ages 18+, $40 for residents, registration required.

Fridays: Young Rembrandts – Van Gogh Sunflowers at the Linden Hills Rec Center on Fridays from 10-11a. Session runs from 10/11 to 11/1. Explore the creative world of Van Gogh. We will use Van Gogh’s famous paintings of sunflowers as inspiration in this class led by Young Rembrandt’s talented teaching artists. Ages 55+, $65 for residents, registration required.

Sundays: Linden Hills Farmers Market in the Settergren’s parking lot, from 10a-1p through 10/27. Rain or shine.

Sundays: Sunday Dinners at Picnic, from 4-9p through the summer. Rotating pop-up dinners. No reservations – first come, first served.


OCTOBER

October 1: Whiskey Curious at Picnic on Tuesday, 10/1 from 7:30-9p. Always wanted to know more about bourbon, rye and whisk(e)y, but intimidated by where to start? Join Picnic owner, bourbon enthusiast and mompreneur E Kitzenberg and her team to demystify the good brown and help discover what YOU like. This is not an old boys club whiskey tasting. $45 tickets available in advance or upon walk-in.

October 2: Voter Registration Letter Writing Event at Comma on Wednesday, 10/2 from 6-8p. We’ll write letters to unregistered potential voters and encourage them to vote and we’ll share recommendations for great books to read about democracy and politics, eat snacks, and have fun doing it. Please RSVP here so we know how many to expect.

October 3: Everett & Charlie Gallery Grand Re-Opening on Thursday, 10/3 from 5-7p. Join us for a fun evening of “Paintings & Prosecco”. Come meet some cool Artists and shop the newly remodeled Gallery.
Free Everett & Charlie ceramic mug to the first 10 people to buy a gift certificate for $50+.

October 3: Reading & Signing: Ahnwee Days with William Burleson at Comma on Thursday, 10/3 from 6-7p. Join us for a reading and signing with William E. Burleson, author of Ahnwee Days, a laugh-out-loud satire about the value of community and how small towns across the country are struggling against forces far beyond their control.

October 5: Buckthorn Pull at Roberts Bird Sanctuary on Saturday, 10/5 from 9:30a-12p. Follow signs at the west entrance of the Sanctuary (near the small parking lot northeast of the Lake Harriet bandshell) to the pull site.

October 6: Vikings Game + Bagels at Picnic on Sunday, 10/6. The bar is open from 8a-12p. They’ll have the game on with volume, and pour bloody’s and beers.

October 6: Music in the Chapel: Amanda Grace + Friends at Lakewood Chapel on Sunday, 10/6 from 3-4p. Amanda is a Minnesota native and has released music drifting between folk and alt-pop/rock. Tickets $20 in advance.

October 6: Sunday Dinner pop-up at Picnic with Chef Eric Pham from Khue’s Kitchen on Sunday, 10/6 starting at 4p. First come, first serve.

October 7: Conversation and Connect at the Linden Hills Library on Monday, 10/7 from 9:30-11:30a. Join your neighbors for a conversation and coffee while browsing items from Hennepin County Library Special Collections featuring the community’s past. Topics include aerial photos of Minneapolis in the 1920s/30s, downtown department stores, seeds and gardens, and Linden Hills then and now.

October 10: Social Media Voice: Finding Authenticity at the Linden Hills Library on Thursday, 10/10 from 6-7:30p. Through case studies, exercises, and examples, explore what kinds of voices an organization might take on, and how to go about determining the best fit for yours.

October 11: What is Cultural Bereavement? at Lakewood on Friday, 10/11 from 6:30-8p. Explore the topic of cultural bereavement – the experience of loss and grief for (im)migrant and refugee individuals and families. Free.

October 12: A Path for Reflection: Labyrinth Workshop at Lakewood on Saturday, 10/12 from 5:30-7p. Embark on this journey of self-discovery and communal connection as we explore the depths of the labyrinth together, from creation to contemplation. Tickets $30 in advance.

October 12 & 13: Take the Trolley to Farmer Ken and Jan’s Pumpkin Patch on Saturday and Sunday from 12:30-4p. Take a trolley ride and bring home a Halloween pumpkin. Riders get off the car at the “pumpkin patch” where they can search for just the right pumpkin. Streetcars make frequent trips to the pumpkin patch. There are no advance tickets or reservations. Regular fares apply; pumpkins are $7 while supplies last.

October 13: Oktoberfest Block Party on Sunday, 10/13 from 12-8p. Picnic is hosting this block party at Upton Ave S between 43rd & 44th. Celebrate over beer, sausage and music! Join us for live music (Private Oates, Lazy Scorsese & more), kids activities, Oktoberfest beer and food and the ultimate day of autumn revelry! Presale entry tickets are available for $5 (kids 10 & under are free).

October 15: Lakewood Book Club: The Milk Hours by John James at Lakewood on Tuesday, 10/15 from 5:30-7p. This month’s book is the author’s debut poetry collection about loss, the intimacy of art and dreams, and the vulnerable space of new life. Free, registration is requested.

October 15: Whiskey Snobs Batch 2: Brother Justus at Picnic on Tuesday, 10/15 from 7:30-9p. For Batch 2 of Whiskey Snobs, we’re putting the focus on Minnesota. Phil Steger, Founder & CEO of Brother Justus will join us for a special evening tasting through his award-winning portfolio of American Single Malt Whiskeys and Chef Andrew Garner’s Minnesota-inspired menu to match. Tickets $120, seating is extremely limited.

October 17: The Grand Meadow Chert Quarry: A Significant New Indigenous Site with the Linden Hills History Study Group on Thursday, 10/17 from 7-9p. Speaking event with Tom Trow, who is the lead archaeologist for the effort to open to the public a long-hidden archaeological and cultural site in Mower County, MN. October 18: Graveyard Ghost Stories on the Trolley on Friday, 10/18 at 8:30p. What’s better than a spooky story? Three spooky stories, in the dark, by a cemetery, on a one-hundred-year-old trolley. Hear classic tales of the beyond read by Twin Cities celebrities. It’s the literary event of the season! One night only! One show only! Don’t miss out! Tickets required and available online: $23 per ticket.

October 19: Tree Planting in Roberts Bird Sanctuary on Saturday, 10/19 from 8:30a-12p. Follow signs at the east entrance to the Sanctuary (near the Peace Garden double gates) to the planting sites.

October 19: Transylvania Trolley on Saturday, 10/19 from 12:30-4p. Count Karl the Vampire Motorman is your host for this Halloween trip. Not scary ― just silly. Wear a costume and get a treat. The ride is about 15 minutes and no advance ticket or reservation is required. Regular fares apply.

October 20: Fall Colors Celebration at Lakewood on Sunday, 10/20 from 10a-2p. Join us on the open grassy grounds of Lakewood for art activities, music, cookies and hot apple cider, and more! This open-house style event is free and open to all! No registration is required.

October 20: Comma’s Fiction Book Club. Read and discuss a variety of fiction books. This meeting is discussing Headshot by Rita Bullwinkel on Sunday, 10/20 at 4p.

October 21: Craft and Listen at the Linden Hills Library on Monday, 10/21 from 9:30-11:30a. Join your neighbors for a morning of crafting and conversation while listening to a variety of audio short stories. Bring a craft to work on while you listen and chat. No registration required.

October 24: Visible Mending Sampler at the Linden Hills Library on Thursday, 10/24 from 6-7:30p. Extend the life of your favorite worn-out, scuffed, or stained clothing pieces by mastering mending techniques that will keep your wearables out of the landfill and in your closet. It doesn’t hurt that they’re decorative, too!

October 25: The Late Show on the Trolley on Friday, 10/25 at 7p & 8:30p. Why should kids have all the Halloween fun? A not-so-serious look at little-known chapters in streetcar history — with something slightly off. What could go wrong? This experience is not recommended for children or the humor-impaired. Tickets required and available online: $15 per ticket.

October 26: Streetcar Named Expire on the Trolley on Saturday, 10/26 from 7-10p. Travel through the dark forest aboard a spooky trolley. What fate awaits those foolish enough to ride to the end of the line? This event is suitable for most family members ― there’s no blood or gore ― but may be frightening for the very young. And the later it gets, the more frightening the ride becomes. There are no advance tickets or reservations. $5 fare or you can purchase a $12 Fright Pass for unlimited rides throughout the evening.

October 27: Fall Pancake Breakfast at Lake Harriet Masonic Hall on Sunday, 10/27 from 8a-1p. This is an all-you-can-eat charity breakfast, featuring pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, and sausage. This event supports the following community partners: Lake Harriet Community Schools PTO, Joyce Uptown Foodshelf, and Edina Public Schools Blood Glucose Monitoring Program. Purchase tickets in advance here ($10 each or $5 for children ages 6-12).

October 27: Buckthorn Pull at William Berry Woods on Sunday, 10/27 from 9:30a-noon. Look for signs to the pull site near Richfield Rd & W 40th St.

October 27: Last day of the Linden Hills Farmers Market on Sunday, 10/27 from 10a-1p. The market is in the parking lot of Settergren’s of Linden Hills. Embrace the spooky spirit and wear costumes as an early Halloween celebration!

October 27: Halloween-themed pop-up at Picnic on Sunday, 10/27 from 6-11p. Conceptualized by Halloween-obsessed Gabby Spangler, executed by Chef Ben Spangler, of Bebe Zito. Spooky drinks by Pete Nguyen will be on the menu too. Costumes encouraged!!!

October 30: Walking Tour at Lakewood on Wednesday, 10/30 at 4p & 5:30p. Explore the beauty of Lakewood on this free evening walking tour. Join our tour guides on an informational and fun journey through our oldest section and buildings as we share information on Lakewood’s history, our notable residents, and more! Free, registration required.

October 31: All Aboard Trick ‘r Treat on the Trolley on Thursday, 10/31 from 4-7p. A special time for neurodiverse folks, families, and friends. Regular fares apply.

October 31: Meet the Artist Happy Hour at Evertt & Charlie Gallery on Thursday, 10/31 from 5-6p. Come by the gallery and meet the artists! Sip on a beverage, be happy, buy art!

October 31: Spirits on a Streetcar on Thursday, 10/31 at 11p. Take a ride with seasoned paranormal investigators on the historic Minneapolis trolley this Halloween and see if there are any spirits who join us! We’ll be using real investigation equipment to identify any possible paranormal activity on this historic streetcar during the time of year when the veil between worlds is the thinnest. Tickets required and available online: $50 per ticket.

November 2: Comma’s Body, Mind, and Spirit Book Club. This meeting is discussing Briefly Perfectly Human: Making an Authentic Life by Getting Real About the End by Alua Arthur on Saturday, 11/2 at 9a.

November 7: Short-Form Content 101: The Art of Going Viral at the Linden Hills Library on Thursday, 11/7 from 6-7:30p. Discover the art of creating viral content on platforms like TikTok and Instagram to market yourself and/or your professional ventures. This class explores the secrets behind trending videos and posts and teaches you how to use the platform’s features to spotlight your ventures. In collaboration with the Loft Literary Center. Free, registration required.

November 7, 12 & 14: Ancestral Connections with Nyttu Chongo at Lakewood Cemetary from 5-6p on each date. Join Lakewood in welcoming Nyttu Chongo, an artist who awakens people’s connections to ancestral roots through the power of traditional African music, rhythm, sound, and cultural experience. Free.

November 10: Resonant Reflection: A Sound Meditation at Lakewood Chapel on Sunday, 11/10 from 10-11:30a. Join Lakewood for a healing sound meditation in the historic Lakewood Memorial Chapel, hosted by Thomasina and Bob Fisk of Waking Nomad. Tickets are $10 in advance.

November 10: Music in the Chapel: Twin Cities Hardingfelelag at Lakewood Chapel on Sunday, 11/10 from 3-4p. Featuring five Hardanger fiddles on one stage, the Twin Cities Hardingfelelag delight listeners with their reverberant sounds, rollicking asymmetric rhythms, and festive Norwegian clothing. Tickets $15 in advance.

November 10: Picnic Sunday Dinner: Ed Zhang of Bao Bao Buns presents Turkey 6 Ways on Sunday, 11/10 from 4-9p. First come, first serve.

November 17: Comma’s Fiction Book Club. Read and discuss a variety of fiction books. This meeting is discussing The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich on Sunday, 11/17 at 4p.

November 17: Picnic Sunday Dinner: Sushi by Baaska from 4-9p. First come, first serve.

November 29: All Aboard For the Holidays on the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line on Friday, 11/29 from 11a-2p. A special time for neurodiverse folks, families, and friends. Please share the joy of the season – bring a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots. Regular fares apply.

November 30: Holly Trolley on the Como-Harriet Streetcar Line on Saturday, 11/30 from noon to 3:30p. Take a streetcar ride with Santa, then toast a marshmallow and warm yourself by a friendly fire. The ride is about 25 minutes — so Santa has time to visit with each child. Tickets are trip-specific so you won’t have to stand in line. Tickets go on sale for just that day beginning about 11:30a in the Linden Hills station.
